ERF

From the early days in 1953, when Edward Beck set up Contractors (Transport) Ltd, the British built ERF tractor unit was a popular make utilsed in the fleet.

In this section you can see just a few examples of the many ERF tractor unit's the company operated throughout years.

One of Edward Beck's early ERF 4X2 tractor unit's was Reg        No GYK 199 seen here coupled up to a 12ft 6in low-loader          while parked on Whitworth Street Manchester in 1955.

1956 and ERF 4X2 tractor unit Reg No DWD 867 heads this line up of abnormal loads carrying steel storage tanks.

They are pictured after loading up at the premises of 'The General Engineering Company' Bury Road in Radcliffe near Bury Lancashire.

Another early ERF 4X2 tractor unit in the fleet was Reg No         F0V 852 which is pictured here coupled to one of the                               company's Carrimore low-loaders.

Pictured parked in Greg Street depot Stockport is KV Cabbed ERF 4X2 tractor unit Reg No PJA 672.

Powered by a Gardner 150 engine it is seen coupled up to a loaded four in line low-loader.

Seen here in 1966 at 3 o'clock in the morning, about to cross the Menai suspension bridge over to Anglesey, is Edward Beck's 1962 registered KV Cabbed ERF 64GX 4x2 tractor unit Reg No PJA 672.

Hauling a low-loader with a large steel vessel on board, drivers mate/steersman Graham Phillips assists the driver as it manoeuvres round the corner.

With the bridge closed to normal traffic this was one of three loads that were transported on that particular night to the Isle of Anglesey on behalf of the manufacturer Joseph Adamson of Hyde in Cheshire.

1958 and pictured here when brand new and fresh out of the paint shop is this built to order KV Cabbed ERF 6x4 double drive heavy duty tractor unit Reg No UNE 2.

Powered by a Rolls Royce engine, in line with a Fuller 12 speed gearbox it is parked in the depot awaiting the fitting of it's hand made headboard.

In 1958 Edward Beck & Son Ltd introduced this built to order KV Cabbed ERF 6x4 double drive heavy duty tractor unit Reg No UNE 2 into their ever growing fleet.

Powered by a Rolls Royce engine, in line with a 12 speed Fuller gearbox, it was used as a duel purpose vehicle both as a tractor unit and as a ballast tractor when fitted with its detachable ballast box.

It is pictured here in Enfield in 1968 after the unloading three large drums of AEI electric cable during the extensive upgrading of the high-voltage electric power transmission network, otherwise known as the national grid.

Boalloy LV Cabbed ERF 64GX 4x2 tractor unit Reg No YDB 596, powered by a Gardner 150 engine, was one of a number of brand new Boalloy LV Cabbed ERF's introduced into the fleet in 1963 some with the consecutive number plates of YDB 596 to YDB 601.

This particular vehicle was later fitted with a replacement  LV cab made by Jennings.

 Teddy Beck recalls below.....

"A number of our Boalloy Cabbed ERFs had to have a new Jennings LV cab fitted after being in service for a while.

This was due to the fact that many of the early Boalloy built cabs were a complete and utter disaster with the front panel coming away, windscreens falling out and doors falling off etc".

Throughout the 1960's one of the company's main contracts was collecting and delivering American built Caterpillar & International heavy plant machinery from Liverpool and Salford docks as well as from Caterpillar's own manufacturing plants in Glasgow and Birtley.

Edward Beck invested heavily to ensure they always had around 50 trailers parked up at any one time on the docks so as and when a ship docked all imported Caterpillar equipment could be loaded and taken off the dockside immediately, thus saving Caterpillar a fortune in quayside storage fees.

Boalloy LV Cabbed ERF 64GX heavy duty 4x2 tractor unit           Reg No YDB 601 is pictured here again, this time being                    utilised hauling a 15 foot wide abnormal load.

The Mini was parked there so as to give a scale to the size                                     and width of the load.
